making a movie |

You're an aspiring filmmaker with a vision--and Fire Escape, the U of C's premier student filmmaking organization, can help you to bring that vision to the screen. Our organization is fortunate enough to work with professional-grade equipment, and dozens of student filmmakers of all interests and styles have worked with Fire Escape to realize their projects. What do you need to do to get involved with Fire Escape and start making movies of your own? Here's the breakdown. COMPLETE AN INTO PROJECT. Your first step is to complete an Introductory Project: a project advised by a more experienced club member that will introduce you to the basics of movie-making. You'll learn how to use our cameras, sound, lighting and editing equipment, and will also learn about our policies and procedures. Intro Projects take a variety of forms, from apprenticeships on an experienced filmmaker's project to (most often) original projects that are created by a group of new filmmakers working together. Fire Escape usually runs Introductory Projects at the beginning of every quarter, particularly during the Fall. Attend Fire Escape's first meeting of the quarter to get involved, or e-mail the Fire Escape Committee at fecommittee@listhost.uchicago.edu at any time to learn about opportunities. Read more about Intro Projects in the Fire Escape FAQ PROPOSE YOUR OWN PROJECT. Once you're acquainted with the basics, you should have the skills you need to undertake a project of your own. When you have a solid idea, have done some planning and pre-production work, have recruited at least some cast- and/or crew-members, and are more or less ready to start shooting, fill out a proposal form (download it here) and submit it by e-mail to the Fire Escape Committee. The Committee doesn't evaluate the artistic content of projects, and only in extraordinary circumstances will a proposal be denied. The Committee should get back to you within 48 hours. Read more about Proposing in the Fire Escape FAQ JUMP THROUGH THE BUREAUCRATIC HOOPS. Before you can use Fire Escape equipment for your approved project, you need to: a) pay $10 in dues to the Finance Chair for equipment use for the quarter b) fill out a quarterly equipment use contract (available here) and give it to any Committee member You can always pay or submit a contract at any Fire Escape meeting. Printed-out contracts will be available at the first meeting of every quarter. Read more about the Bureaucratic Hoops in the Fire Escape FAQ RESERVE/USE EQUIPMENT. MAKE YOUR MOVIE! After these few meager steps, you're free to embark on your project! To do that, you'll need equipment. Fire Escape's equipment is available by reservation. Make reservations (listing the individudal pieces of equipment you want to use and the dates and times when you want them) via e-mail, at least one week in advance, with our Equipment Chair. Reservations are made on a first-come, first-serve basis, so the sooner you make them, the better! Read more about Reserving Equipment in the Fire Escape FAQ After that, there's nothing left to do but astonish the world with your talent. We look forward to seeing your work! If you have more questions about Fire Escape's procedures and policies, look in our FAQ, or e-mail the Committee. |
