In May, Fire Escape was fortunate enough to be part of MAB’s amazing Summer Breeze Festival where we handed out new merchandise and treated the crowd to live student made projections to warm them up for headliners Nas & Damian Marley.  If you weren’t able to make it, don’t worry.  For a limited time we’re providing the 20 minute long visual extravaganza below as it was shown during the show.  Enjoy everything from dancing Legos to the Cool Kids in this seizure-enduing wrap up of projects from the last few years.

Our friends at the Chicago International Film Festival are hosting a 60-second film that examines who and what we are.  What causes people to start a war? Grow a flower? Create art? Advance technology? Pollute the environment? Seek knowledge? What is our place in the world? A program of finalists will be screened during the 46th Chicago International Film Festival and online, and the top three films will receive some hefty cash prizes.  Visit here to enter or find out more!

Every year Fire Escape hosts a Spring Film Festival in the Film Studies Center made up of productions made under a certain theme.  This year’s theme is International Film.  This can be interpreted to encompass a wide variety of film styles, check a few suggestions below if you’re in need of a little inspiration:

  • Italian Neo-realism: “You live and you suffer.” (Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica)
  • French New Wave: “A virginal heartbeat has its own juvenile logic.” (Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut, Jacques Rivette)
  • German Expressionism:  (The Cabinet of Caligari, Metropolis)
  • The Western: “Every gun makes its own tune.”
  • Bollywood
  • Film Noir (The Big Sleep, The Big Heat, and The Big Combo!)
Get together with a group of friends this May and make a quick ode to your favorite international genre.  Or e-mail the committee at fecommittee@uchicago.edu if you’d like to be put in a group.  The deadline for entries is Monday, May 31st.

The Opportunity Shop: Call for Artists

Written by Ivan. Filed under Call for Entries. No comments.

The Opportunity Shop is a transitory, experimental project space for contemporary art in Hyde Park.  The current iteration is at the old Hollywood Video at 1530 E. 53rd Street. The OpShop bills itself as a place “where local, national and international artists come together to creatively facilitate conversation and community interaction in a dynamic art environment.”

Fire Escape members have shown their films there before.  Check out the Call for Artists page if you’re interested.

Also, don’t miss out on an upcoming event at the OpShop, a live historical reenactment of Geraldo Rivera’s infamous televised search for Al Capone’s vault.
